Asbell

Update 2006-I have not been able to do much genealogy research in the past few years as we have been fairly busy with our children and repairing our home which was flooded in 2003. I have saved everything everyone has sent to me and will one day get back into it.

I have research on cousins, etc that has not been added to this page as well as updates that have not been posted. All that you will find here is direct lineage-father to father. I also have more information on some of the individuals listed here that will not be included but may be useful to others researchers.

Genealogy research tends to be full of errors so, if you have any additions, connections or corrections, please contact us at: contentmentacres@yahoo.com. We are interested in more branches (sons, daughters, wives, etc) as well as family stories and pictures.

Civil War Service: listed at www.civilwar.com as enlisting 1/11/1861 as private into K Co. 2nd NC Calvary. There is no date/method of discharge given. He was 1 of 17 men wounded at Brandy Station, VA 6/9/1863. On same date, 4 were killed and 2 taken POW. A family member told me James was shot in the face. You can see James' injury to his face in the photograph (see above). James was listed as absent/wounded on 11/31/1863. His brother Henderson Asbell enlisted in K Co on the same date. He was taken POW 6/9/1863 at Beverly Ford, VA. (kindly provided by Dee)

d.

m. Esther Mariah Winslow (bond obtained on 9-13-1858 Chowan Co, NC married on 9-15-1858 see Chowan Co, NC Marriage Bonds 1741-1868) Some researchers have Elizabeth Byrum listed as his first wife and Martha Twine as his second wife. I believe this is an error because Esther Mariah Winslow is listed as living with James and Sarah Elizabeth Boyce in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Also see Marriage Bonds of Chowan Co, NC.

Everything above I have well documented. However, I have not been able to successfully document that James Asbill/Sally A. Byrum (below) are Jesse's parents. LDS's site lists them as having a son named Jesse-am looking for better documentation. The dates are right. This is the missing link...

Below is documented by several other researchers. However, I have not been able to document that Joseph and Dorothy Ross are the parents of the CORRECT James Asbill. Their son James' birthdate and birthplace does fit however. It would have put him about 37 when he married Sally Byrum. Of all of the James' I came across, his information was the only one I could not rule out.
