How Bad Did It Get for Me?
I was going to write a pregnancy by pregnancy account. Not only do I not have time for that, but I also don't want to relive it. I generally do not enjoy talking about and for years kept it a secret from family and friends. It was/is hard.
This isn't a pity party. This is to share what happens with HG and the need to treat and monitor yourself carefully. I hope it helps mobilize caregivers to take it seriously and loved ones to offer prayer and support. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 3: Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
These are some of the issues I have had during my pregnancies that are directly related to HG. Other women experience more. Some women die. Others lose their babies.
tooth loss
tooth damage
severe hair loss
bleeding gums
nutritional deficiencies
tears in the esophagus
bleeding from the throat
bleeding from the stomach
severe dehydration
electrolyte imbalance
ptyalism aka sialorrhea (excessive
saliva)
severe weakness (I could only walk about 15 steps and would have
to sit to rest in the middle of a shower. Some days I could
barely sit up in the bed.)
depression
hernias
incontinence
stomach ulcers
permanent voice change from scarring in throat
long lasting food aversions/eating disorder
loosening of the fingernails from the nailbed (nutritional cause)
low amniotic fluid
ketosis
significant weight loss (greater than 5%)
