Carter Beans

Where we live, people are always dropping off cats. The ones that prefer little human contact and do not cause harm to our poultry, we trap so we can immunize and deworm on a schedule. The ones that are people friendly, we either place in homes or keep.

Brandon and Amanda were about 7 and 5 when we let them keep a kitten a stray kitten that had quickly formed a bond with our family. We told them they could choose any name they wanted to, but to pick one and stick with it.

One day they announced they were calling their little outside buddy "Carter Beans."

"Carter Beans? What does that mean?" I asked, perplexed.

"We don't know, but it's a nice name, right?" Brandon asked.

"Yes, it will make a memorable name. I like it. Where did you hear it?"

"Veggie Tales." Amanda said.

"OK." I said, still confused. I had watched all of their Veggie Tales movies and did not remember any of the characters ever saying Carter Beans. I was wondering if this was something like calling styrofoam peanuts "Jimmy Carter Snow." It was one of those things that make you say "Hmmm."

Time passed. The kitten grew up. Thinking the reasoning behind the unusual name was one I'd never solve, I gave up trying. Then one day, I put in a Veggie Tales video as a reward for clean bedrooms. I heard Amanda singing, so I left my work in the kitchen to listen to her enjoy her treat.

"Broccoli! Celery! Gotta be VeggieTales! Lima beans! Collard greens! Peachy keen! VeggieTales! "

Only, on the collard greens, Amanda was singing her heart out with "Carter Beans."
