Our Chihuahuas!

Sox and Shysie were given to us by a lady who had to move to care for her mother. She really hated parting with them. Shysie's name when she came was Cleo, but she did not always respond to it. We started calling her Shysie (Native American for quiet, little one) and she liked it, so it stuck. Sox knew his name and responded well to it, so we didn't change it.

We have never cared for small dogs that much. The ones we had seen were yappy, hyper and not well trained. Well, we've been re-educated. Both are very, very smart dogs who quickly molded into the routine with our family. Neither bark except when strangers come and once they know they are OK, they are quiet. They have enough energy to keep up with our busy family of seven and get along well with the other dogs. We really like them!

When we first brought them home and saw how tiny they were, we wondered how they would do in our busy household with other animals. They have an uncanny ability to be right at your feet but are experts at avoiding getting stepped on.

Shysie is the smallest living thing on our farm, with the exception of Pepper, the ferret. Although she is outsized by everything she comes in contact with, she doesn't let it slow her down. She does whatever it is she has to do and does not let anyone or anything intimidate her, including the goats. She wakes up excited to spend each day with our family! This is one tiny dog with a whole lot of love. Shysie is Wendy's shadow during the day and is very intuitive to our individual moods. If she senses someone is having a rough day, she's there gazing up at them with her eyes bright and her tail wagging to cheer them up. She is just starting to learn to howl with the command "sing." Mostly because she doesn't want Sox to have the spotlight to himself!

Sox is a cuddler. If there's a way to get into your lap while you are resting, he'll find it. He loves going for rides and hanging out with the boys outside. At night, he's under someone's blanket curled up against them. Sox doesn't just sleep with you, he leans up against you so you know you are not alone. He is very agile and has even learned to howl with the command "sing." He will bark when he has finished his potty and wants to come back inside. If we are not at the door, he will walk around the house until he hears our voices and then bark from there so we'll hear him. Sox has 4 white paws and a white tip on his tail.
