When we first moved into our place back in 1995, I got a phone call from a "security company" which wanted to know if we had a automated security alarm in our home. Something seemed strange to me about this call, so I told them "Yes, we do. It has an early detection and warning system followed up by a an intruder defense mechanism." The lady asked me what kind of system I had. I told her I had two guard dogs (Nala and the now deceased Simba) and a shotgun. She said "You're joking, right?" I said, "Nope, I am DEAD serious. You try it out one night and see how well it works." A few weeks later, we learned from the evening news that other people were getting these same phone calls right before being robbed. We never had any problem.
