September 2006

Our family is looking forward to cool fall weather, time spent outdoors and maybe a camping trip or two before winter sets in.
Write and let us know what is going on in your lives. Sometimes people drop in but forget to drop us a note. We enjoy hearing from you.

This month did not start off good. We had the animal attacks (access info at the bottom of this page) we've been having escalated and we lost a goat in an ugly manner. Immediately afterwards:

This is at the beginning of the storm. I went out to see if Clint could get home.
I did take a few more picts but they are on the film camera. I did not get any at the peak of the flood though.

Ernesto came and flooded our barns but our home stayed dry.
I have more photos from Ernesto and will put those up when I get the film developed.
I had to switch cameras when the digital got wet.

Brandon's green snake eggs hatched out. He really got a lot out of the experience. He let the entire family go.

Racing. They had 13 cautions during this race!!

Joshua and Bethany had birthdays this month!!!

Joshua's 7th birthday wish was to be able to sleep on the top bunk in his bedroom.
Can you tell he's happy?

We finally finished painting in the boy's room. Well, I still have a little touch up to do when time makes itself available.

That paint color was the result of mixing several leftover cans we had and adding a dark blue to it. We call it Asbell Blue.
The train is from Clint's childhood.

Cheap Winter Animal Bedding

Our grass was suppose to be cut the day we found Earnestine. We were tied up all that day with the officials. The next day, Ernesto flooded everything and messed up wiring on the mower. Since the grass was so tall, we decided to make this the time we rake it for animal bedding. We had planned to do that later in early October like we do every year, but we figured we'd take advantage of the situation and get it done early.

We have been doing this for winter animal bedding since we moved here. We just let the grass grow tall, mow it, let it dry, rake it and store it. It took Wendy 9 hours in one day to do all of it before the children were old enough to really be a help. Now, it takes 4 hours with 6 of us working. It makes for a pleasant day outside, good exercise and we really appreciate pioneers, farmers and modern machinery after we are done. Our yard use to be field that grew grasses for horse feed, so we know it is mostly good things for them to eat in case they nibble on it.

Work can be fun!

If those are your pj's and you want them back, give us a holler. :-D
We found them in the grass today.

Little E. "Clair"

Her name is Little for her mom Little May. E. for Earnestine, her grandmother and the goat we lost to the coyote. (Her hair is a bit longer than the others, so we think she inherited some of Earnestine's Angora genes.) "Clair" because if you flip her over, she looks like an e-clair with chocolate right down her middle. Mostly, we call her Brandon's baby, as in "Where is Brandon's baby?" He has fed her around the clock without reminders since she was born. He is the one who found her within minutes of her birth. She was the smallest of the triplets and probably the result of a later breeding. Without him, she would not have made it. She is like a little dog that follows him around when he's outside working. She adores him and he's very fond of her.
